No injuries were reported as firefighters responded to a call of three houses under construction going up in flames in a south Overland Park neighborhood early Monday morning.
Around 4:20 a.m., crews from Overland Park Fire Department were called to a two-alarm house fire at 11100 West 172nd Terrace, in a subdivision just off of Pflumm Road.
Responding crews found three homes engulfed in flames upon arrival.
These houses were in the framing phase of construction, meaning they did not yet have any fire protection in place, according to the fire department.
“Tremendous thermal columns combined with winds from the south spread flaming embers to the adjoining house to the north and radiant heat likely ignited the house to the south,” the Overland Park Fire Department said in a statement. “All three homes were fully involved within minutes.”
According to the statement, as they began dousing the fires in water from all sides, additional units from Overland Park and Olathe were brought in to assist with the controlling the flames.
Additionally, water also flowed onto a fourth occupied house to the north to protect it from falling embers.
Residents from the fourth house were evacuated. That home did not end up catching fire, according to an OPFD spokesperson.
Officials say it took just over an hour to bring the fire under control.
The cause behind the fire is still under investigation, but the fire department said it began with the middle house before spreading to the homes under construction on both sides of it.
