Nick the Greek, a California-based fast food restaurant, has opened its first Johnson County location near 135th Street and Pflumm Road earlier in this month. The San Jose-based restaurant has all the traditional food you would expect to find at a greek restaurant, such as gyros, falafel and pitas, and also sometimes includes french fries inside their sandwiches, as you can see above. A new California-based chain offering traditional Greek street food has expanded for the first time outside its home state into Johnson County.
Earlier this month, Nick the Greek Souvlaki and Gyro House opened its first location outside California in Olathe near the Overland Park city line at 14321 W. 135th St., right in front of Academy Sports.
The San Jose-based restaurant has all the traditional food you would expect to find at a Greek restaurant, including gyros, falafel and pitas, but some of their offerings come with a twist.
Nick the Greek offers up several gyros with French fries inside the pita with the meat, tomatoes, onions and tzatziki.
They also serve classic greek desserts, like baklava and greek frozen yogurt, if you have a sweet tooth.
The quick-service franchise was brought to the Johnson County area by local franchisees Kathleen Gibreath and her husband Art.
In addition to co-owning the new restaurant, Kathleen works as the head coach for Blue Valley Northwest’s girls golf team, while Art is an account executive at Zoom Video Communications.
“It’s awesome food that we’re really excited to bring to the Kansas City metro,” Kathleen Gilbreath said. “This will be the first Nick the Greek outside of California.”
The franchise is currently working to expand into other states, including opening a second metro location in Kansas City, Kansas.
For now, though, all 29 franchise locations can only be found across both northern and southern California.
Nick the Greek was founded in 2014 by three cousins, all of whom are named Nick and grew up with parents in the restaurant business.
According to the company’s website, the idea for the restaurant was born when the youngest cousin, “Baby Nick,” traveled home from a trip to Greece and realized that there was nowhere near his home in California where he could get good gyros.
