Leawood is home to a new ice cream spot.
This week, frozen treats chain Cold Stone Creamery celebrated its official grand opening at Town Center Crossing shopping center.
It moved into a space at 4535 West 119th Street, on the southeast corner of Roe and 119th Street.
Cold Stone Creamery had a storefront in the neighboring Town Center Plaza from 2003 to 2009, when it did not renew its lease.
This is the first return to the neighborhood for the Arizona-based company in more than a decade.
The new storefront sits between outdoor gear purveyor Orvis and jewelry and accessory shop Kendra Scott.
This store makes the sixth Cold Stone Creamery location currently in the Kansas City metro, including franchises in Olathe, Independence, at Village West in Kansas City, Kansas, on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, and north of the river on Barry Road.
Franchise manager Max Soloman, who oversees other Kansas City locations, said he is excited to expand to the Leawood area and serve a new community. He said this includes Leawood’s well-established Jewish community.
“Our stores are Kosher-certified, so we can serve all kinds of communities here,” he said. “We are really glad to be here in Leawood and especially in the Town Center.”
Mayor Peggy Dunn voiced support for the new store and welcomed it into its new Leawood Chamber of Commerce membership.
“They say that every shopping center needs a great ice cream shop,” she said. “I know that this is going to be a welcomed addition.”
The space Cold Stone is now in was formerly occupied by Glace Artisan Ice Cream. The ice cream shop run by local chocolatier Christopher Elbow closed its Leawood location in 2017.
Cold Stone Creamery in Leawood will be open seven days a week.
It opens at 12 p.m. and closes at 9 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday. It’s open from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
