Five Blue Valley students took home first place wins at the 56th Annual Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference.

But one student stood out: Blue Valley High School junior Genevieve Jarrell won the gold in four events, including:

  • Podcast Production Team
  • Business Meeting Management Concepts
  • Digital Marketing Concepts and Marketing
  • Management and HR Concepts

This feat — winning gold in so many categories — according to the event’s sponsors, may have never been done before.

Some background: BPA is an organization that provides educational opportunities for students nationwide, who are preparing for careers in business and information technology.

  • Through the organization, students learn more about pursuing careers in business management, information technology, finance, health administration, office administration and other related career fields.

The competition: Taking place from May 4 to May 8 in Dallas, Texas, Jarrell and the other Blue Valley students competed alongside thousands of others students.

  • The events included presentations or tests that would later be judged for awards and placements.
  • Students can compete in events that they either preemptively prepared for or they can enter open competitions.

Jarrell’s project: One of the events Jarrell won first place in, which she had prepared for ahead of time, was the Podcast Production Team competition.

  • She partnered with another Blue Valley High junior, Eleanor Warren, to create a podcast on the negative and positive impacts of popular social media app TikTok.
  • “We basically just had to record this podcast on our own time and then make a presentation about it explaining the project. We then had to present that to the judges,” Jarrell said.

All the BV winners: Blue Valley’s other first place winners in the BPA 2022 National Leadership Conference included:

  • Evanna Dominic, Blue Valley Southwest – Health Leadership
  • Eleanor Warren (along with Jarrell), Blue Valley High School – Podcast Production Team
  • Nathan Stanley, Blue Valley High School – Digital Media Production
  • Carter Hagen, Blue Valley High School – Computer Programming Concepts
  • Eleanor Warren, Blue Valley High School – Ethics and Professionalism

Key quote: “I felt prepared, but I’m still very surprised, obviously, to win four awards,” Jarrell said. “I felt very honored to represent Blue Valley and Kansas by bringing home these awards.”
