Leawood to review country club's plan for more pickleball courts

Hallbrook Country Club in southern Leawood may soon have more pickleball courts.

The Leawood City Council on Monday will review and potentially approve preliminary plans and a 20-year special use permit for an expansion at the Hallbrook Country Club.

The club wants to more than quadruple its pickleball footprint

Located at 11220 Overbrook Road, the country club plans to install four new pickleball courts north of the club’s single court.
The club also wants to replace the tennis bubbles — or permanent coverings for all-season tennis play — over four of the club’s seven tennis courts.

The club also wants to build a new sports retail shop

The two-story retail space is intended to complement the clubhouse.
In addition to the new shop, the plan also calls for a new cart barn, sidewalk improvements, and a patio expansion to the clubhouse.
Overall, the expansion calls for roughly 18,000 square feet of new space.
The country club acquired a special use permit to build the clubhouse in the first place, but per the city’s development ordinance, the club has to acquire a new special use permit in order to make any modifications to it.

The Leawood Planning Commission already approved the expansion

After the public hearing over the expansion got postponed in January, the commission approved the preliminary plan in February.
In the weeks preceding that approval, a notice went out to nearby residents from the country club’s owners about the proposed expansion.
Overall, pickleball’s popularity has grown recently in Leawood and throughout Johnson County.
