City staff say construction is expected to finish up this summer.

It’s a move years in the making after the city’s former parks and recreation headquarters off 104th Street suffered permanent damage from flooding in the summer of 2017.

The new facility will be used for storage, offices

• The site plan calls for a 50,000-square-foot building with workshops, a greenhouse, a covered storage space and administrative offices.
• The office space will include individual offices, a fitness area, training room and kitchen.
• According to city documents, the building will accommodate 28 full-time city employees.

It will replace the flood-damaged parks facility

• The city’s former parks maintenance facility previously operated at 104th Street and State Line Road.
• The facility suffered permanent flooding damage after a storm in 2017.
• Plans to move the facility to higher ground have been in the works since then.

The project is in Leawood’s long-term capital improvement plan

• The Leawood Planning Commission approved the project in 2021.
• The city also included the project in its 10-year capital improvement plan, which was approved last year.
• Other parks projects in the works for Leawood include new playgrounds at Tomahawk Park and I-Lan Park.
