Basecamp Fitness, a gym specializing in “fitness for the fierce-hearted”, will soon bring its group workouts to Johnson County.
The company is set to open its first local franchise in southern Overland Park in August.

Where exactly will it be?
Basecamp Fitness will operate at 8661 W. 135th St., just off Antioch Road.
The new studio will neighbor Firestone Complete Auto Care and Mr. Gyros Greek Food & Pastry.
It will offer fitness classes every day of the week.

Each session lasts 35 minutes and includes a combination of cardio training and weight training, typically consisting of cycling and lifting heavy items like kettle bells, weights and medicine balls.
Christie Cook, the franchisee of the new Overland Park studio, said the goal of Basecamp Fitness is to give people of all ages and fitness levels a workout every day of the week.
“We believe that there are many great workouts out there, and if you apply yourself to doing something five days a week, you’ll probably get really great results,” she said. “But (Basecamp Fitness) just creates a fun environment so people want to just keep coming back because of community even more than the workout itself.”
This is Basecamp’s first Johnson County studio
Cook previously operated a Basecamp Fitness studio in Pasadena, Cal.
Basecamp Fitness is owned by Minnesota-based Self Esteem Brands, which also owns Anytime Fitness — another fitness studio that recently opened in southern Overland Park.
In the meantime, the studio has been hosting pop-up workout events at the Prairiefire shopping center’s Chicken N Pickle.
Cook said she and her husband — who is originally from the Kansas City area — hope to open two more Kansas City locations on the Missouri side of the metro.
